Vocabulary - Using dictionariesOn this page, you will find information about different types of dictionaries and word lists. There are also Amazon Affiliate links to specialist dictionaries in the column "Reference Books". Many learner's dictionaries of general English are available online for free. However, more specialist dictionaries, such as the Oxford Learner's Dictionary of Academic English (OLDAE) may need to be bought or accessed via a paid app. Although dictionaries are expensive, they can be a worthwhile investment. A good set of dictionaries for an international student learning English might include: a thesaurus (a dictionary of synonyms); a dictionary of academic vocabulary, and a dictionary of subject-specific terms (technical words used in a given subject). Word lists are another useful resource for learning vocabulary. Major publishers, such as Oxford University Press, have produced lists of words which can be accessed through their online learner's dictionary websites. One such list is called the "Oxford 3000" word list with an extended version called the "Oxford 5000. Another list, called the Academic Word List (AWL) Coxhead (2000), is a list of words from 570 word families. The words on the AWL appear frequently in written academic texts so knowledge of these words is important for improving accuracy in academic writing.
